Essential oil therapy is therapy that uses natural oils produced by plants to treat different health conditions and diseases. It is believed that the fragrance that comes from the oils stimulates the nerves in the nose. This stimulation then sends impulses to the brain that triggers a memory or emotion. This will then have one of two effects on the body, it will either a calm the body or stimulate the body.
Where Do Essential Oils Come From
A plant’s flower, stalks, leaves, bark, rind or root can give the essential oil. These oils are then taken and mixed with a carrier oil or a lotion or alcohol. Peppermint oil can help you perk up when you are feeling tired and give you that little boost you may need when your spirit is low.
Bergamot is a wonderful mood lifter. It can also help relieve feelings of frustration and anger. This oil is also photosensitive, so if you are applying this to your skin as a topical agent, it is highly recommended that you avoid direct sunlight for 48 hours after applying.
Cedarwood promotes relaxation and healthy liver function. This essential oil is a wonderful massage agent.
Cinnamon Bark is one of the most antimicrobial essential oils and this essential oil therapy is used to treat viruses. There is ample research that shows that virsues are not capable of living in the presence of cinnamon bark.
Basil will help to stimulate the mind, make you feel better and help in decision making.
Frankincense is historically a ceremonial oil, used to deepen breathing and elevate consciousness; helps to make us aware that reality is multidimensional; also helps break unwanted ties with the past.
How Safe is Essential Oil Therapy?
Generally speaking essential oil therapy is very safe. You are using natural, holistic elements. There are however some medical conditions that may cause adverse reactions to this type of therapy, so it is advisable that you talk with your doctor before starting. If you are prone to skin allergies there are some oils that may cause irritation in the eyes, nose and mouth. If you are pregnant you should not use essential oil therapy because there are some oils that trigger uterine contractions.
